Empowering each student in our program to reach grade level in both math and reading.
Ignite Change, Be a Champion
Ignite Change
Most of the youth in our program are at least 2 years behind in their major subjects. With your help, for just 1-2 hours a week, we can ignite change in their trajectory and make a huge difference.
Be a Champion
We need volunteers to be tutors!
No special skills are required.
Training is provided and tutoring is conducted via a computer based program. This opportunity is generally scheduled during the school day.
Volunteers complete an application, background check, interview, training modules and affirm our policies for interactions with the youth.

We are primarily focused on students needing help with elementary level skills, but can support students at all grade levels.
-
You’ll meet with your assigned student once a week for 30 minutes to 1 hour each session, typically at their school. That’s just 1 hour per week to make an impact on a child’s life.
-
Sessions are typically held on-site at the student’s school, providing a safe, familiar learning environment.
-
We ask for at least one academic year to build trust and consistency.
-
Yes, all volunteers must pass a background check to ensure child safety.
-
Yes! Our Fostering Success Tutoring Manager works to match you with a student whose academic needs align with your strengths and interests—ensuring a meaningful partnership.
-
Tutors sign a Tutoring Guidelines sheet, which requires 1 weeks’ notice for absences (unless an emergency or unexpected illness). You will be responsible for finding your substitute via the GroupMe. If you can’t find a sub, reach out to the Fostering Success Tutoring Manager, and we’ll try to help find a sub for you. Please keep in mind that absences without notice will result in not being allowed to continue in our program.

Impact and Support
-
Yes, we offer monthly in-person training sessions for new tutors and quarterly trainings open to all our volunteers. You are asked to attend at least one quarterly training per year.
-
If you have a laptop you are willing to use for your tutoring sessions, you may do so. Otherwise, we will provide a laptop on loan for you to use.
-
Many of the youth we tutor have experienced trauma and can display dysregulated behaviors. Although, from our experience, they are often happy to be there and receive individualized help. Once they get to know their tutor, they are more comfortable and look forward to their visit each week.
-
Currently, the program is structured for in-person tutoring at the school. If virtual tutoring becomes an option, we will share updates and guidelines accordingly.
-
We offer mentoring as well as Book Bus opportunities. We also have a summer tutoring program hosted by our local church partners, which is another way to make a significant impact with the youth we serve. If you’d like more information, email us at info@thechampionproject.org.
-
Tutors are a powerful force for good. Many students enter the program significantly behind grade level, sometimes by four grade levels or more. Studies show that when youth in foster care receive consistent academic and emotional investment, outcomes improve dramatically. Your time, encouragement, and mentorship can change a child's trajectory.
-
We license a personalized learning platform, IXL, which measures each student’s progress and makes recommendations on focus areas to accelerate their learning and development.
-
You’ll have access to:
Curriculum and materials for tutoring sessions
Regular check-ins with our Fostering Success Tutoring Manager
A community of fellow volunteers and opportunities for group training
-
The IXL personalized learning platform will provide instruction to help you prepare for your tutoring session, and we recommend reviewing in advance to arrive prepared for each tutoring sessions. Our approach of “I do, we do, you do” means you’ll help guide the student through the lesson first before they try on their own.
